It’s become apparent that the North East is home to a hive of active mobile app developers. That said, there’s no structure in place for conversation or collaboration, no way to brainstorm or share ideas.

Does the North East need another forum for professionals in digital media? Certainly – there needs to be a space to come together and address specific and unique needs and concerns. As for businesses in the region, where plenty of national and international brands are based, it’s far too easy to look elsewhere for developers.

Without creating something tangible, it’s impossible to gauge how much interest there is in mobile app development, or how useful such a community would be.

AppNorth is a starting point. Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Symbian, whatever – it may take a while to establish, but it has the potential to create a valuable ecosystem in the North East of England. Specifically:

a support network for freelance developers

a social network for all developers

a community for sharing and collaboration

a portal for potential clients to discover and engage professional services

regular monthly meet-ups, informal and open to all

adhoc events with guest speakers

To kick things off, the first meet-up will be Tuesday 16th March at a location TBC. Keep on eye on Appnorth.co.uk or follow AppNorth on Twitter for further details in the coming days.
